Helping Kids Get Their Rest

As we settle back into the groove of the school year, early morning start times make establishing strong sleep habits more important than ever. Middle schoolers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to support their growth, mood, and academic success.
Here are three simple ways to help your student build a healthy sleep routine:
  • Establish a Screen Cutoff: Have devices turned off or docked outside the bedroom at least 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime so their brains can wind down.
  • Keep a Regular Schedule: Aim for consistent bedtimes and wake times—even on weekends—to keep their internal clock balanced.
  • Create a Restful Environment: A cool, dark, and quiet space encourages deeper, uninterrupted sleep.
Prioritizing sleep today sets our students up for a successful week ahead!

⚖️ DID YOU KNOW? — Why Does Morgan Contact Families About Attendance?

Chronic absenteeism includes all absences—excused and unexcused. Missing 10% or more of the school year is considered chronic absenteeism. Washington's regular-attendance measure considers students regular when they miss no more than an average of two days per month.

Truancy is different. It involves unexcused absences.

Under Washington law:
• 1 unexcused absence: Family is notified.
• 3 in a month: School meets with the student and family.
• After the 2nd and before the 7th: The school takes data-informed steps to reduce absences.
• 7 in a month or 15 in a school year: If interventions have not substantially reduced absences, the district must take the formal truancy steps required by law, which can include a juvenile-court petition.

Washington does not set a specific parent-contact threshold for excused absences at the middle-school level. Morgan may still contact families when excused absences begin adding up because excused absences can still mean missed learning.

Our goal is to partner early—not wait for a legal issue.
🎯 Fewer than 10 missed days.
