MMS Boys Basketball

We are excited about the upcoming season and developing the skills of these young men.

Welcome to the 2026 Boys Basketball Season at Morgan Middle School. We are excited about the upcoming season!

Tryouts: First day of tryouts will be Thursday, Oct. 22. The tryout period will be a minimum of four days with a potential 5th day if needed.

Practices: Practice will be from 2:30-4:20, Monday-Friday. Athletes need to exit the building no later than 4:35. Eighth grade will be in the Main Gym while 7th Grade will be in the Auxiliary Gym. Attendance to practice is mandatory. Athletes must bring appropriate attire and shoes for practice. If students leave campus on Wednesday after school gets out, they must reenter from the east side of the building by the football field. They should not be reentering the building through one of the main entrances.

Absences: Athletes must notify their coach if they’ll be late or absent from practice through REMIND, email, or in-person. If your athlete is injured and is not able to practice, their attendance to practice may STILL be required unless worked out with their coach. Being absent from practice, whether excused or not, may result in lost playing time for the upcoming game.

Academics: Athletes must also maintain good academic standing. Athletes who are failing one or more classes may continue to practice but will not be eligible to participate in games until they are passing all classes; in accordance with school athletic eligibility requirements.

Discipline: Disciplinary decisions will be made in accordance with school and athletic department policies, and will consider the severity and circumstances of the incident, as well as the student-athlete’s previous behavior. Consequences may include reduced playing time, suspension from one or more games, or removal from the team. When appropriate, parents/guardians may be asked to meet with the student-athlete, team coach, head coach, and athletic director to discuss the situation and determine appropriate next steps. The goal of discipline will be to hold student-athletes accountable while providing an opportunity to learn from their actions and make better choices moving forward.

Philosophy and Player Development: Middle school basketball is an opportunity to help develop the players as athletes and basketball players, while providing opportunities to better themselves as young men. This includes being a model student and developing servant leaders: earning good grades, helping pick up the gym/lockerroom, sweeping the gym flooring, etc. The main priorities of Morgan Basketball are to create an environment that is safe, enjoyable, and challenges student-athletes to improve every single day. After those three priorities are met, we want to be a competitive and winning team.

Playing Time: Depending on fouls, attitude, effort, etc., the goal is for each athlete to play close to half the time in the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter, coaches will focus on playing athletes who have demonstrated outstanding effort, who’ve made a positive impact on both offense and defense, and are displaying great attitude. If an athlete receives a technical foul or
Game Day Attire: Students are expected to wear nice clothing to school on game days (polo, button up shirt, clean nice pants, etc.). No sweatpants, flip flops, crocs, or other relaxed attire. Failure to follow the team dress code may result in disciplinary actions.

Game Day Expectation: For home games, athletes must report to the locker room entrance by 3:00. Between 2:15 and 2:55, players should either be at Homework Club or leave campus. Players on both A and B Teams MUST help set up chairs and the scorers table before running through set plays and get shots up. It is the expectation that athletes on A-Team watch from the stands to support their peers and vice versa. If a player from B-Team needs to head home because of homework or another commitment, please let their coach know. Upon completion of the game, players are expected to help take down chairs and clean up the gym and locker room.

Bus rides: Players must ride to the away location on the team bus. Upon completion of the game, students are allowed to ride home with their parents. Parents will need to sign the release form with their athlete’s coach. Players must adhere to appropriate behavior on the bus.

Jerseys and Shorts: Athletes will receive a reversible jersey and shorts to use for games. We will wear white for home games and blue for away games. Players must bring their jersey and shorts on game day. Failure to bring your uniform may result in not being allowed to play. Coaches will do their best to bring an extra jersey and pair of shorts, but we cannot guarantee we will have an extra one. Jerseys and shorts must be returned at the end of the season. Failure to do so will result in a fine from the MMS Athletic Department.

Sharing a concern with a Coach: If a parent has an issue with playing time or an in game coaching decision, please allow for 24 hours before speaking to the coach. If there is a concern about bullying, harassment, or anything related to the safety of your child, please speak with the head coach or your child’s coach as soon as possible.
